Even girls get the blues…

What Can I Do? is the debut single from The Black Belles. A dark and sexy all-girl quartet signed to Jack White’s Third Man Records.

Not only does the tune sport a distinctively Dead Weather-esque sound (distortion must be popular in Nashville these days), but the video was personally directed by Mr. Jack White himself. A win win situation if you ask me.

Rumours are that Jack White has also had a hand in the songwriting as well. If that is the case, can Jack White do anything wrong right now?

Save 6music!

6music for me is a station for music lovers. And that is right across the board – from the listeners to the presenters to the guests to the interns who lick envelopes for free, you name it, everyone involved at that station loves music and it really comes across that way. It is a pleasure to listen to.

Radio 1 is for kids. The “record buying” public. Fine. Let the kids have their music and pretty TV presenters (and Chris Moyles). I simply don’t bother listening to Radio 1 during the day anymore. Radio 2 is for people who are perhaps a little older who don’t really have a great deal of interest in music but are perfectly happy listening to Paulo Nutini and Joss Stone. What do we have for people who don’t belong in those categories? That’s right, 6music!

From a listener’s point of view, the loss will be obvious but 6music being shut down will also have a MASSIVE impact on the music industry in my opinion. It is commonly said that this country has produced arguably the best music throughout history. I still believe that a lot of great bands come out of this country but the platform for new artists is getting smaller and smaller.

Yes, we have Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens and John Kennedy but they are what you would call ’specialist’ DJs. The simple fact is, there is not enough air time to promote new and upcoming artists on these shows. Zane Lowe has to play the big new releases. He gets to “big up” a couple of new bands a week. Huw Stephens and John Kennedy give a bigger view of what’s going on out there but as I say, their air time is also limited. This will mean that radio pluggers from the major labels will be able to swoop in and buy their way onto these limited playlists while the smaller labels struggle.

If bands can’t get exposure from these stations, it will kill off independent labels. It will kill off new bands. 6music gives smaller bands and labels a leg up. It brings new music to people’s attention.

I believe it costs £9m a year to run 6music. Considering that the BBC probably pay more than that to Wossy and Chris Moyles alone is bad enough but the fact that it is taking away music from avid music fans makes it ten times worse.

Andy Parfitt and Mark Thompson are so out of touch it is untrue. What are we paying these guys for really?! As well as that, I happened to catch an episode of Holby City last night. How can the BBC justify paying those wooden actors yet put legends like Steve Lamacq out of work? It’s a bloomin’ disgrace I tell thee!

So, I ask you, as a music fan to sign the petition below and pass it on to all your friends. The internet is a very powerful thing. People power can save the day. Let’s keep this station going. For the love of music. Do it!

One band that you simply MUST hear…

I rave about a lot of new bands and I always write like an hyperactive child using words like “amazing” and “best thing I’ve ever heard”.

Well, in the case of Wrexham’s Gallops the adjectives are all true. They ARE amazing and they ARE one of the best bands I’ve ever heard. Obvious comparisions can be made to the likes of Battles and Foals but their brand of electronic post/math rock has a darker psychedelic side to it. A melting pot of dark synthesis, room rumbling bass, walls of guitar noise and Sabbath esqe riffing is all backed up by ferocious locked in Bonzo tinged drum grooves, which are so good they make you want to smash up the room you’re sitting in (this tends to be more satisfying in a house other than your own by the way).

When I first saw them, I was overcome by the sort of excitement I’d not felt since first seeing Kling Klang - which says a lot. If you find yourself on public transport while listening to Gallops, you’ll suddenly look and feel much cooler with a burning rage to spit in the faces of all of those who are wearing a suit and reading a book.

To quote Lemar - if there’s any justice in the world, they will take the world by storm. Their music is fresh, atmospheric, passionate and like all great music, fucking LOUD! Turn it up to eleven and don’t be surprised to be saying “Mogwai who?” after listening to them. Plus as an added bonus, they’re all sound geezers. I’ve witnessed their drummer break stick after stick, smash his kit to pieces and cut his knuckles open without even breaking a sweat.

One last thing - GO AND SEE THEM LIVE!

New York’s best kept secret?

Wild Yaks are what could accurately be described as being a buzz-band. They hail from Brooklyn (yes, I know, ANOTHER band from NYC) and are surprisingly relatively unknown to most and only really known by A&R scouts and new music bloggers such as myself. Perhaps coming from such a great city with a superb musical history can be a negative thing in that so many great bands get lost as only so many can be heard.

Nevertheless, their music is accessible and passionate, and perhaps most importantly, it’s a ton of a fun delivered by musicians that clearly put blood, sweat and tears into their performances.

They don’t strike me as being a band that play casual gigs either. I imagine they play with passion and dedication. Here’s hoping they make it over to the UK soon so I can see for myself!

At the time of writing, they have less than 2,000 friends on MySpace. Which is very surprising. They deserve to be heard, seen and adored by many many more and with a bunch of performances lined up at SXSW next month, maybe it’s only a matter of time before they are.

In the meantime though, embrace them, love them and feel great about being one of the cool few that know about them.

They’re on Spotify. Check them out!

One louder

Menacing vitriolic grunge pop trio Ono Palindromes are an unsigned band to watch out for. They make uncompromising visceral rock n roll and doth their communal cap to the likes of Sonic Youth and Future of the Left.

They sound like a band with intense burning desire and that’s just on record. I imagine they’re even more chaotic live.

Ones to keep your eyes on definitely. And ears too. Not too close mind you, loud is always fun but loud is not always safe. Just ask Pete Townshend.

The Killer Meters

The Killer Meters are seriously funky and fun. If they don’t make you want to shake your ass then there’s something wrong with you.

No, I don’t mean shake your pet donkey. If you do that then there’s definitely something wrong with you. Animal cruelty is not big and is it not clever. Just put the donkey down and dance to these funky cats.
