Household Name's in the NME

The strange thing about a recession is that quality suddenly replaces money as the benchmark of success. Lo and behold, Household Name Records are revered this week in the NME for their consistent ability to turf out quality music and give it to us on a plate. If you don’t know them already, you should check out this legendary outfit and have at least one of the hundred or so punk/hardcore releases they’ve clocked up so far on your music player of choice.

The tour kicks off in July and Chris Martin hand picked the Rock ‘n' Roll teenagers to give the US crowds a taste of their unique sound.

Milke Are The Cream

Having won the Camden Crawl's prestigious Indie Idle band competition, Milke are well on the path to full-blown commercial success with their new single "Maybe I'm Crazy". Part of their prize was some free manufacturing through Key Production, which they have wisely chosen to apply to a limited 7" of their single with an exclusive B side track "Alien". The digital release hits i-tunes on 29th June and includes the live favourite "Resignation". This band ticks all the boxes, an indie buzz with plenty of electro cool to fatten it up, and I warn you, "Maybe I'm Crazy" is catchy as hell!

Shed Smash for Punks Not Dad

PUNKS NOT DAD have done a video for their song "In Me Shed" which is the official song of National Shed Week (I'm not making this up!) which culminates in the Shed Of the Year competition (this year's judges include Chris Evans and Sarah Beeny). Somehow they conned Lisa Rogers (from "Scrapheap Challenge") to appear in the video after she interviewed them on BBC Wales and now it's a viral hit racking up 11,000 plays on YouTube in a few days. The single is out on 6th July on X Fist Records

Catchy, Quirky and Quintessentially English

The Voluntary Butler Scheme is Rob Jones, a 23yr old jobbing drummer turned singer/songwriter, who will shortly be serving up a single "Tabasco Sole", followed by "The Voluntary Butler Scheme At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea", his debut album. There is the undeniable stamp of Motown on his lo-fi sound, as if those classic arrangements and production techniques have been lifted and dropped into one man's bedroom world of fantasy, where small, ordinary things are used to commentate upon the ups and downs of life. The songs are simple and direct with the instant and charming appeal of a mind that is simultaneously down-to-earth and brimming with imagination. Don't be deceived by the homemade feel though, this is pure contemporary British pop.

Tabasco Sole is released July 20th 2009 on Split Records

The Voluntary Butler Scheme At Breakfast, Dinner, Tea is released 31st August 2009 on Split Records
